HISTORY OF FLAIR BARTENDING

Regardless of what many people think, flair bartending did not begin after the movie Cocktail hit the big-screen. Flair has been around since the late 1800's when the first true mixologist, Jerry Thomas invented a drink called the Blue Blazer. In the making of this drink, Thomas would light a glass of Scotch on fire and pour it in a stream of fire from one glass to another. Flair then took a different form at the turn of century during the Vaudeville era with street performers jugglers. Finally, in 1988, a movie starring Tom Cruise hit the big screen, and a resurgence of flair began. Friday's, long known as the leader in the flair industry, held their first National Flair Bartending competition.  The winner, J. B. Bandy had met someone working on the movie, also ended training Mr. Cruise for the movie. In fact, if you pay attention, the first bar that Cruise's character worked at was a Friday's in New York City, and the servers wore the traditional Friday's red & white stripes.

After the movie came to theaters, bartenders everywhere began to flip bottles. As time went on, bartender competitions outside of the Friday's company began to be held more & more. One of the biggest was the Quest for the Best competition at Walt Disney World's Pleasure Island. It was this competition that really helped to spark flair in the United States & it was here that the four founders of HSE met and began to form the ideas that embodied the company. Established in 1997, in Las Vegas, Nevada, High Spirits Enterprises is a company formed by four highly experienced flair bartenders that shared common beliefs and goals.

High Spirits believes in creating quality cocktails in a creative and expedient manner while upholding the utmost quality in service. The company's goal was to help grow flair bartending beyond any boundaries that stood in the way and to bring flair bartending to the masses in any way possible.  Twelve years later the goal has become reality.  Today, competitions happen in all corners of the world throughout the year.  Flair bartending has grown exponentially in the past twelve years and there is no end in site.

HIGH SPIRITS TODAY

High Spirits is now owned and operated by six-time World Flair Bartending Champion, Ken Hall. While HSE still maintains its original beliefs and goals the companies original focus has expanded. Currently, HSE's main focus is on organizing and running flair bartending events.  Almost five years ago HSE partnered up with the FBA (Flair Bartenders' Association, www.barflair.org) to bring the world the first ever Flair Bartending Tour.  The FBA Pro Tour as it has become known began as six events (known as the CORE Events) and 2008 brought about over 20 events worldwide to the Tour.  The Pro Tour has taken off better than we ever imagined and the Tour's events now attract bartenders for all corners of the globe and continue to get bigger with each year.

HSE has a flair training DVD on the market entitled, Learn to Flair. A video that teaches flair bartending from the basics of flair. It is one of, if not the best, flair training videos on the market for novice flair bartenders or anyone wanting to learn the secrets that Word Champion flair bartender, Ken Hall, worked so hard for so long to perfect.  HSE's second training DVD entitled the Learn to Flair 2 - The Art of the Multi-plex, is currently in production and will be more for advanced flair bartenders looking to expand their skills.  All of HSE's products can be purchased in our ONLINE STORE. 

Over the last few years, HSE has expanded outside of the flair world and added a new aspect of bartending to its portfolio with the world of mixology.  Almost two years ago, Ken was brought on board as lead mixologist in NOIR Bar in Las Vegas, PURE Management's first ever mixology bar.  Ken and the staff of NOIR have worked hard creating some of the most creative and innovative cocktails to date.  NOIR Bar has won numerous awards in Las Vegas for its cocktails and has become recognized as THE place to go for great cocktails in Las Vegas.  

HSE has created several specialty cocktail menus over the years including the original menu of the Voodoo Lounge high atop the Rio Casino in Las Vegas, Tangerine Nightclub in Las Vegas, aura Nightclub in the Bahamas and several others.  HSE has put together several successful drink programs over the years and can bring its years of experience and knowledge to your bar.
